IGI (International Gemological Institute)
IGI is the largest independent gemological laboratory and the leading certifier of lab grown diamonds. IGI certificates for lab diamonds include: clear "Laboratory Grown" designation, full 4Cs grading (cut, color, clarity, carat), growth method (CVD or HPHT), measurements, polish/symmetry grades, fluorescence, and a unique report number with QR code verification. IGI is recognized worldwide and is the standard for lab diamond certification.
GIA (Gemological Institute of America)
GIA is the most prestigious and strictest gemological laboratory, known for setting the 4Cs standard. GIA began certifying lab grown diamonds in 2020. GIA certificates are highly respected and may support slightly higher retail pricing. However, GIA certification is more expensive and slower than IGI. GIA lab diamond reports include the same information as IGI, with GIA's renowned grading consistency.
IGI vs GIA: Key Differences
Market share: IGI certifies ~80% of lab diamonds; GIA certifies a smaller but growing percentage.
Cost: IGI is more affordable (lower certification cost → lower wholesale price). GIA is more expensive.
Turnaround: IGI is faster (days to weeks). GIA takes longer (weeks to months).
Recognition: Both are globally recognized. GIA has stronger brand prestige among traditional jewelers; IGI is the lab diamond standard.
Grading consistency: Both are consistent. GIA is known for slightly stricter color/clarity grading.
What to Look for on a Certificate
Verify: "Laboratory Grown" or "Lab Created" designation (not "natural"), full 4Cs with specific grades (not just "good"), growth method (CVD/HPHT), unique report number, security features (hologram, QR code), and issuing lab (IGI/GIA logo).
