The Importance of Accurate Ring Sizing
A well-fitting ring is comfortable, secure, and showcases the design perfectly. Poorly sized rings are uncomfortable, risk falling off, and may need expensive resizing. Whether you're a retailer helping customers or an individual measuring at home, accurate ring sizing is essential. This guide covers everything you need to know.
Standard Ring Size Systems
Ring sizes vary by country. The most common systems:
US/Canada: Numbers 3-13 (including half sizes), based on inner diameter in inches.
UK/Australia: Letters A-Z (including half sizes).
Europe: Numbers based on inner circumference in mm (40-76).
Japan/China: Numbers 1-27, based on diameter.
Always confirm which system your customer is using. Holycome uses US sizes as standard but can accommodate any system.
Method 1: Measure an Existing Ring
The most accurate method if the person already has a well-fitting ring:
1. Take a ring that fits the intended finger (not the thumb).
2. Measure the INSIDE diameter with a ruler or calipers (measure in mm for precision).
3. Convert to ring size using a size chart: 14.0mm = US 3, 15.7mm = US 5, 16.5mm = US 6, 17.3mm = US 7, 18.1mm = US 8, 18.9mm = US 9, 19.8mm = US 10.
4. For wide bands (6mm+), measure a wide ring if possible — wide bands fit tighter.
Method 2: Measure the Finger
If no existing ring is available:
1. Use a strip of paper or thin string (not stretchy).
2. Wrap around the base of the intended finger, mark where it overlaps.
3. Measure the length in mm (circumference).
4. Convert: 44.2mm = US 3, 49.3mm = US 5, 51.8mm = US 6, 54.4mm = US 7, 56.9mm = US 8, 59.5mm = US 9, 62.1mm = US 10.
5. Measure at the end of the day when fingers are warmest (fingers shrink when cold).
Method 3: Ring Sizer Tools
For retailers, a professional ring sizer set is essential. Two types:
Ring mandrel: Tapered rod with size markings. Slide an existing ring onto the mandrel to read its size.
Ring sizer set: A set of metal rings in all sizes. Have the customer try on rings to find the perfect fit. This is the most accurate method.

Tips for Accurate Sizing
Time of day: Fingers are smallest in the morning and largest in the evening. Measure at end of day.
Temperature: Cold fingers shrink; warm/humid conditions swell. Measure at room temperature.
Band width: Wide bands (6mm+) fit tighter. If measuring with a thin sizer for a wide band, go up 1/4-1/2 size.
Dominant hand: The dominant hand is usually slightly larger. Measure the actual hand the ring will be worn on.
Knuckles: If knuckles are large, the ring must pass over them — size for the knuckle, not just the base.
Multiple measurements: Measure 2-3 times and average. If between sizes, choose the larger size (easier to resize down than up).
Resizing Information
Most rings can be resized 1-2 sizes up or down. Rings with stones all around (eternity bands) cannot be resized. Silver and gold rings resize well. Resizing typically costs $20-60 at a jeweler. When in doubt, order slightly larger — resizing down is easier and less expensive than sizing up.
Retailer Best Practices
Offer a printable ring sizer on your website. Include sizing instructions with every order. Provide a ring size chart in product listings. Offer free resizing within 30 days (reduces returns). Keep a ring sizer set in-store for customer fittings. Accurate sizing reduces returns and increases customer satisfaction.
